About this event
WC's Advocates for Equity Committee presents:
A Tour of Black Doctors Row
Christian Street from Broad to 20th Streets
Philadelphia, PA 19146
A portion of the event proceeds will be donated to The Free Library of Philadelphia.
Amy Jane Cohen, author of
Black History in the Philadelphia Landscape: Deep Roots, Continuing Legacy, will lead a 1.5-hour tour of Christian Street from Broad Street to Twentieth Street, the corridor that the Philadelphia Historical Commission designated as Black Doctors Row in 2022. (Note: This exclusive tour is not currently offered by any tour operators.) Ms. Cohen, the first teacher at Masterman High School and among the first in the Philadelphia School District to teach a course in African American History, will share stories of the homes and community institutions of what was once known as "Black Main Street." One featured stop, The Deacon, is located in the former First African Baptist Church, which hosted luminaries including Booker T. Washington, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and Thurgood Marshall.
