On November 1, 2025, Lisa is hosting as we visit the Smithsonian American Art Museum to explore and celebrate our diverse, multicultural country through video installations and art exhibits. Specifically, we will see:
1) Shahzia Sikander: The Last Post. This video artwork critically considers the legacy of British colonialism in Asia using Sikander’s signature approach of infusing Indo-Persian miniature paintings with a contemporary perspective.
2) Sightlines: Chinatown and Beyond. This exhibit organized by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, provides glimpses into the complexity and depth of Asian American connections to Washington, DC. The exhibit includes artwork, material culture, images and other graphic material drawn from Smithsonian collections as well as shared by local lenders.
3) Isaac Julian: Lessons of the Hour-Frederick Douglass. A presentation of Isaac Julian’s tour de force moving image installation interweaves reenactments across five screens to create a vivid picture of 19th century activist, writer, orator, and philosopher, Frederick Douglass.
We'll meet at noon in the G street lobby, near the gift shop entrance. The Smithsonian American Art Museum is located at 8th and G streets, Northwest, Washington, (in the same building as the Portrait Gallery.) It's right at Gallery Place Metro.
Following the exhibits, around 1:15, we will have lunch together at Jaleo, Jose Andres' flagship restaurant in DC.
Event Host: Lisa Rubenstein. Repeat attendees will be invited to host a future event.
